It’s spring already and YIA is having a very good year!
A speaker from Valley Youth House (VYH) visited the members of YIA on September 26th to help them understand a little more about the homeless situation in Buck’s County. Mr. Wood had some of the children dress in different types of clothes to guess who was homeless. It wasn’t as easy as it seemed! They learned that being homeless was all too possible and learned to be more compassionate. After Mr. Wood’s presentation, YIA members filled bags of toiletries that he and VYH will use for the people they serve.
On October 24th attending members of YIA assembled over a hundred meals for Aid for Friends. The meals were a hearty mix of meatloaf and mashed potatoes with healthy vegetables in keeping with the chilly days of fall and winter.
In November YIA members made sun catcher ornaments for the parish’s shut-ins. They also made Christmas-themed ornaments to be included in the parish’s gifts from the Love Tree.
And now it is spring! YIA attendees planted herbs for our shut-ins for Easter, and plan on putting together another meal for Aid for Friends in April. The group will also be collecting toiletries and school supplies for Valley Youth House (VYH). There are a few more things in the wings too. YIA won’t be losing its momentum any time soon!
January’s meeting, which was to focus on ‘Two Feet of Love in Action’, was rained out and the activity was rescheduled for March. Two Feet of Love in Action is a youth activity developed through the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Two Feet of Love helps participants understand the importance of, and the difference between social justice activities and charitable works.
YIA meetings occur on the fourth Monday evening of every month. The group meets at the same time as PREP, 6:15-7:45 pm. Meetings start with a prayer, scripture, and a short discussion. Then the attendees play a game. After the game, the remaining time is devoted to social justice/charitable works projects as described above. The evening goes by very quickly because everyone is having so much fun!
Keep up with YIA’s schedule and activities by going to the parish website, www.abvmfeasterville.org, scroll down the options on the left and click on ‘Youth Programs’. The group can also be found at the parish’s CYO website, www.abvm-CYO.org.
YIA looks forward to seeing 7th and 8th graders from any school. Come and participate in the fun!
