Ray and Joan Burkett met on a blind date in September of 1959 and were married on June 10, 1961 at Assumption BVM Church. This year they celebrate fifty-five years of marriage.
They are blessed with two sons, Ray Jr. and Richard, two grandchildren, Sean and Taryn, as well as two “daughters” (they don’t like to use the term in-laws), Lynne and Shannon. Family is very important to them. When Ray Jr. and his family moved to Florida they knew that Florida trips would be an important part of their lives. Rich’s family lives in New Jersey, a doable ninety minute drive. They feel so fortunate that Joan’s sister and her husband, Carol and Bob Watson, live nearby and are their best friends and share in their lives.
Their parish is also very important to them. Ray, with the guidance and encouragement of Fr. James Donlon, became a member of the Catholic faith in 1968. He is pleased with the role he has had as Past Grand Knight and is currently an active member of our Knights of Columbus, a member of the Liturgy Board and the coordinator of ushers. Joan volunteers at the rectory as part of the team who tallies the weekly collections and is the President of the Fabulous 55+ Club. Both are also Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and you will find them at the 8:00 AM mass on Sundays.
Both Ray and Joan are retired and enjoy the freedom that retirement provides. It is their hope that they will live out their lives as members of Assumption BVM Parish.
Happy Anniversary Ray and Joan!
