Due to the taxes and red tape involved in retrieving packages in Tanzania, the sponsors of the children at the Sun of Hope Village are asked to only send cards to the children. Last year, this news was a disappointment to the sponsors who wanted to send gifts. Therefore, an idea was quickly conceived in fall of 2016, to collect monetary donations and send them to Tanzania, this way the Holy Spirit Sisters could provide a “first” Christmas to the children. In a few short weeks and with little notice, Assumption sponsors donated a total of $2,107.00 and the children experienced Christmas for the first time in their young lives.
Fast forward one year, and once again, Assumption held a collection for the Christmas Gift Fund, but this year with a little more planning, it was decided that the collection would take place during the entire month of October. In addition, it would be opened to the entire parish, not just the sponsors. A plea went out by email and by church bulletin–we would once again have the opportunity to provide a special Christmas and with thirteen new children, we again had another opportunity to provide a “first” Christmas experience!
Assumption parishioners responded! The generosity exhibited by the parish was awe inspiring–a total of just over $5,600.00 was received! Lisa Shire, who along with her husband Kevin organized the collection, had this to say, “No words can accurately describe the gratefulness I have to my fellow parishioners, when I logged in the last donation and realized the amount that was collected, it took my breath away and I filled up with tears. Thank you to all of the parishioners who took part in this, it certainly is incredible.”
Sister Catherine was presented with the check in November and she forwarded it to the Sun of Hope Village. The Sisters in Tanzania will keep us updated with pictures and emails of how the money was used; please look for this in the next edition of News from the Pews!
