The Pastoral Council…Helping to ensure a fulfilling parish life for parishioners.

“For I know well the plans I have in mind for you says the Lord.  Plans for your welfare not for woe!  Plans to give you a future full of hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

Do you know who helps Father Mike discern and implement plans for the welfare of Assumption?

It is the Pastoral Council.  Over the years a variety of parishioners have used their time and talents in this role.  Our current volunteers:  Janice Bauer, Ann M. Baldassarre, James Brennan, Stephen J. Clark, Steve Dwyer, Bernie Frederick, Matthew Hastings, Sharon Koob, and Robert Watson—as well as parish staff—Deacon Bob Stewart, Deacon Eric Umile and Sister Diane Wolf, SSJ meet bi-monthly to discuss, come to prayerful consensus, and advise Father on the social, spiritual, and pastoral outreach aspects of parish life. The Pastoral Council does not deal with financial matters; that is the responsibility of the Finance Council.  However, a joint meeting between these two advisory groups was held in August 2015.

What is the reason for having an advisory committee?

Vatican II focused on the need for laity to vitally contribute to parish life.  Pope Francis has reaffirmed Pope Paul VI’s call for the Church to listen to the people.  As appointed and elected representatives of our parish community, Pastoral Council members are a way for every voice to be heard.  Their idea to create a suggestion box now provides a way for all parishioners to communicate their compliments and concerns.  And publishing their meeting minutes in the church bulletin is a way for the Council to communicate with and better inform parishioners.

Father Mike believes that because God has given each of us creative gifts, the Pastoral Council is a way to use those gifts, increase lay involvement and make sure our vibrant parish continues to be vibrant.  One of his goals for the Council is to develop a 3-5 year Strategic Plan for ABVM.  Examining what we do and planning for the future shows that the parish is alive and well.

Another of his goals is to make Council members more recognizable so parishioners will be able to comfortably communicate with them.  Then the Council members will more effectively be able to help us fulfill our Mission Statement, “As a parish community united in Jesus and dedicated to Mary, we are called to discipleship through worship and service.”
