Spotlight on Volunteer Requirements

Have you ever considered helping with PREP, Sunday nursery, CYO sports, Youth in Action, Family Promise, or any other activity at Assumption (or another parish) that involves interacting with children?

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia requires the following for all adult (18 years of age) volunteers:


Protecting God’s Children for Adults Class

(also known as Safe Environment Part I)

A session is being offered in ABVM’s church hall on Thursday, March 21st from 6:30-9 pm. Registration is required. To sign up for the session at Assumption or for a session on another date at another location, go to and in the left column, click on the appropriate (green) option: “first-time registrant” or “log-in for existing accounts.” This class does not need to be taken more than 1 time.

Mandated Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse Training

(Safe Environment Part II)

This training can be done ONLY online.



PA Criminal History Check

This is free for volunteers and must be renewed every 5 years. (Click on the yellow button “New Record Check (Volunteers only)”

PA Child Abuse Clearance

This is also free for volunteers and must be renewed every 5 years.

During the last 10 years,

if you have resided only in PA, you will need to download and sign this form:

if you have NOT lived in PA (for 10 continuous years), you must do a federal fingerprint background check. It is not free, and enter Service Code = 1KG6ZJ.

Unfortunately, the clearances are not free, however, not that much — between $10 and $15 each

    As far as we are aware, if someone has not lived in PA for the past 10 years, they must do a federal criminal background check–that one is not free. However, everything else is free for volunteers–and assuming they try to “renew” only when the previous clearances are expiring. For example, if someone got a free child abuse clearance–which is effective for 5 years— in 2018 and then tried to get another one in 2021 because they lost it, they would be charged.
