RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Home Mass and Dinner

Have you ever wondered how and where liturgy was celebrated in the earliest days of the Church? Saint Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians (circa 52-55 AD), quotes verbatim from the Consecration formula being used at weekly gatherings of Christians to celebrate the Lord’s Day. Persecuted Christians were not permitted to erect churches, so they met in people’s homes to share stories and break bread.

Fast forward 2000 + years to Assumption B.V.M. Parish, where the RCIA team and newly initiated/received members of the Catholic Church gather each year in a private home to celebrate the liturgy. According to a member of the RCIA team, Jim Bortz, the group has gathered for this annual event since at least 1988. Jim remembers the year distinctly because that was the year he himself was received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. At that time Father (now Bishop) Tim Senior presided at the liturgy and the DRE was Sr. Mary Agnes Ryan, IHM.

When Joyce Boag-Leyrer became DRE in 2001, the RCIA Home Mass and Dinner was an established tradition with the location varying each year. It was the final celebration of the team and the newly initiated/received (sometimes including family members/sponsors). Like the early Christians, everyone brings something to share at the meal following the celebration of the Eucharist. For the past several years, either Rosemarie and Bill McCafferty or Dolly and Rich Korimsak have hosted the Mass and meal.

This year, the parish celebrated Reception into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church with six people on Easter Sunday—some familiar faces and some new to the parish. At the dinner on May 17, the newly received: Sissi DeLuca (with her daughter and sponsor), Ashley Kamerling, Therese Lennox, Butch Oberlander (with wife, Christine), Allan Tyson, and Nathan Witner, were joined in the home of Rosemarie (and husband, Bill) McCafferty by the RCIA team: Fr. Mike, Deacon Bob (and wife, Linda), Jim Bortz, Dave O’Brien (and wife, Jean), Olivia Picciotti, Sharon Koob, Dolly Korimsak (and husband, Rich), and Joyce Boag-Leyrer.

Before He ascended into heaven, Jesus promised that He would not leave his disciples orphans. In the spirit of that promise, Sr. Diane meets with the newly initiated/received monthly in “Continuing the Journey” sessions for a year following their celebration of Sacraments. The Home Mass and Dinner provide an opportunity for her to meet and greet those who know her well and those who may only have seen her in church.
