ABVM Bible Study Celebrates 10th Anniversary!

What started out as a conversation between Fr. Bill and Deacon Bob ten years ago has become a tradition here at Assumption parish. The two talked about the need to provide some form of ongoing adult formation in the parish and it seemed that Sacred Scripture should be the focus. Using the resources of Ascension Press, The Great Adventure Bible Study series was chosen. The first program was a 24-week overview of salvation history through both the Old and New Testaments. It was called The Bible Timeline. Since then a new scripture study topic has been offered each fall starting in October.

Past studies have included Matthew, Acts, Revelation, James, Psalms, John, Wisdom, Prophets, and this year, Galatians. Each study topic usually lasts for eight to ten sessions and does not require prior participation. Past participants have included both members of our parish and well as people from other neighborhood Christian denominations. Most of the previous study groups have averaged about 30 participants.

Each in-person gathering includes watching a DVD presentation on the topic and small group discussions based on prepared study questions. This year the coronavirus has prevented the study group from meeting face-to-face. But thanks to technology, the registered participants are able to watch the presentations at home via the internet and gather once-a-week for group sharing and discussion using the Zoom application. When each study topic is concluded, the participants select the topic for the next year’s fall bible study. The 2021 scripture study topic will be announced later this year.
